Dream Lake Marriage Proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park
Nick hadn’t planned on hiring a professional photographer for his marriage proposal in Colorado. But all of that changed after he stumbled upon some of my past proposal photography at Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. He was deep into planning a once-in-a-lifetime moment—asking his girlfriend Mandy to marry him during their Colorado vacation—and once he saw how beautifully these moments could be captured, he decided to reach out.
They had both mentioned wanting to visit Dream Lake, one of the most iconic and scenic lakes inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Nestled beneath dramatic mountain peaks and known for its crystal-clear reflection and alpine beauty, Dream Lake felt like the perfect spot to pop the question.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park
Nick and Mandy had a jam-packed Colorado itinerary that included iconic spots like Mount Evans, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Pikes Peak, and, of course, Rocky Mountain National Park. When he and I began discussing possible proposal locations, we considered all of these beautiful Colorado destinations. At first, Mills Lake seemed like the frontrunner, but something about Dream Lake kept pulling Nick back.
It was Memorial Day weekend. I was heading into the desert for a quick family camping trip when I got a text from Nick—he had made his decision. Dream Lake would be the place. But cell service in the mountains can be unreliable, and as the day went on, his nerves began to build.
We had briefly talked about adding some custom champagne flutes or beer glasses as a keepsake for the proposal. Nothing had been finalized, but with the clock ticking and nerves high, I got a message from Nick’s mom saying he wanted to go for it. I called The Glass Art Company right away, and they made it happen. The personalized glassware was picked up that same afternoon.
To make sure nothing went wrong with traffic or timing, I camped near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park the night before the proposal.
Proposal Day at Dream Lake
At 5:38 a.m., I got a message from Nick: they were leaving Denver and on their way. That gave me enough time to prep my gear and hike into the park. Around 8:15 a.m., their rental car rolled into the Bear Lake Trailhead parking lot. Nick had sent me a selfie and a photo of their car in advance so I could ID them without spoiling the surprise.
I took off up the trail to get in position. To help guide Nick, I had placed a bright yellow Nalgene bottle as a discreet marker near the proposal spot. As they hiked toward Dream Lake, I made myself visible just enough to reassure Nick that he was in the right place—without giving myself away.
As they reached the lake, with the majestic peaks reflecting perfectly in the calm morning water, Nick guided Mandy to the marker and dropped to one knee.

What I witnessed next was pure magic. The serenity of Dream Lake, the soft morning light, the emotion on Mandy’s face—it all came together in a moment neither of them will ever forget. And I was there to document it all, from a distance, without intruding on their intimate moment.
